What are the considerations for selecting the length and width of a flat belt. For instance, for a thrashing machine, the belt should be long enough to give room to pull a wagon along side. I would guess also, the longer the belt the easier to get the tractor lined up to keep the belt on. Should the belt be close to the width of the driven pulley? Would appreciate any input from folks that have had some experience with flat belt driven stationary equipment such as thrashing machine, stationary hay baler, corn sheller, etc. Thanks

Frank: Your flat belt should idealally be as wide as the narrowest pulley. Traction is the key here and on that flat belt square inches of contact, belt dressing and tightness is all you have going for you. On the length of belt, longer belts will be less prone to heat build up, also giving better traction. I can remember the old timers on their burr and plate feed grinders, using short belts. When they when to thresh or run a mill they would get the 100 foot belt out. Transfering hp is what its all about.
