Last week I was listening to the news as I drove to work..a 47 year old farmer in the north end of our county was killed by a bull when he went out to get the cows for milking. The bull was reportedly a year and a half old Holstein. I had posted a few months ago about my bull dancing at me one day...I had to two hand him with the pitch fork ...I don't trust a bull any further than my sight line..be carefull out there fellas...my mom used to say "familiarity breeds contempt" and she was right ...we do things over and over and we become trusting and careless and that's when things go wrong...I'll bet that farmer went out to get his cows every morning for years and never thought a bull would be his demise...its a dangerous place , a farm and these stories sometimes are needed to jog our own memories..God bless all you fellow farmers...and be carefull...Mike in Exeter Ontario

I dont have the experence that some of you guys have with Bulls, but I do remember one particular Bull my Grandfather had. I think it was 1978 or so and My Grandfather had a Bull to sevice the heffers. ( not a bad gig if your a Bull)
My Grandfather said this was the most aggresive bull he had ever had. One day wile it was in a pen in the barn Gramps had to go in there with him to do some thing any way he said he made the mistake of turning his back and the Bull jumped on his back!! He thought he was a heffer. Gramps thought for sure he was a goner he had 1000 pound bull on him with both front legs over his shoulders. Some how he extracated him self from that situation.
Gramps knew I was scared to death of that bull. He had run me out of the pasture at least 5 times. He would see me from way accross the pasture. He would storm after me until I was up a tree or over a fence.
One day Gramps decided to play a joke on me wile we were adding salt and putting some stuff in the back scratchers for the cows. I was bent over cleaning out the salt lick and Gramps yelled. Watch out here comes the Bull!!! I didnt even look I just started running. I slipped on one pie and landed face first in another.
Must have been a Hour or so before Gramps quit laughing.
I was sure glad to see that Bull go!

It isn't just the bulls. When I was 18 a Holstein heifer that I had raised with a bucket from birth decided that she was going to mount me. She got one leg fully over my shoulder and the other leg mostly over when I just folded under her. She weighed about 900 pounds and really put the hurt on me. I had back trouble for years afterwards.

I was raised around cattle and had never had anything like that happen before (or since). The heifer had been kind of a pet and had always been very gentle. I was just glad she wasn't heavier and that she didn't step on me coming down.

Cattle are very large compared to humans aand can really hurt us. We need to be careful around them all the time, since sometimes they do the unexpected. ANY bull demands the utmost respect and caution at all times and some are absolutely dangerous.

It is a BAD practice to have a bull running with other cows. They belong in a pen with a baseball bat nearby as a attention getter in case they look at you cross eyed.. There hasn't been a bull on this dairy farm for 55 years.

definately blood smell upsets them. Made the mistake once of driving in the field on 4 wheeler covered with deer blood. Lucky to get out of the field with 4 wheeler & me in one piece. Blood smell even makes cows crazy, & bulls are especially enraged .

Read the other day some where the best bull to keep for being easy to work with is one raised on a cow. I don't know what it does by letting him suck his ma or what but it works. We have a 12 yr old red white holstein. He was on his ma tell she weaned him off. His attitude has rub off on the cows too. They are calm and will let almost anyone work with them. True I never rust a bull. But, A calm one is alot better then one that is out of its head 24/7. Right now we got 2 red and white with the cows.

I raised two bulls at the same time. Started out raising them for beef but never castrated them. Never got around to dehorning them either. Seemed gentle enough since I handled them everyday. I knew if they ever got aggressive, they would go. One day one of them turned his head just right and it looked like he tried to take aa poke at the Mrs. and I saw it. Got her away from them right there and was on the phone in a heartbeat. They were on the trailer the next day. Did not want to ship them that light but could not take the chance they were going to get mean.

We had a man killed by a bull about a month ago also. The bull had been raised from a bottle calf. never trust a bull and be on the look out always!
