I recently purchased a potatoe digger and would like to know how to identify manufacturer, etc. I can't seem to locate any information on the digger, but that could be because it's covered with rust. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

A couple pictures would help lots in identification.

how 'bout my diggers. it has wood handles, a wide shovel to lift potatoes and dirt out, then a bar grate behind with a small cast star wheel to bounce the grate up and down to shake the dirt out and supposed to leave potatoes on top of the ground. doesn't work well, i heard it might be a john deere. but we just use what's called a potato plow. it's just a big sweep looking thing with wood handles. couple of spring tines behind the sweep. it works better.

Smirkey, I was wondering what the big sweep and spring tines look like on your potato plow. I was currently lining up some metal to start building a potato digger and was curious about your potato plows design.

Thanks, Ray in Pa.

Barb: What is the design of your potato digger? Is it a elevator digger, by this I mean endless chain? Or would this digger be a hoe and shaker device? How about a hoe with a forked wheel on back? The answer to those questions could help a lot.

Hugh, The digger is an endless chain type. I have looked over the entire digger and the only thing I have found is a set of 4 or 5 numbers that are really rusted and basically unreadable. It looks like it might have had green paint on it, or that's from being outside. The wheels are iron with paddles on them. Someone told me that it could either be a John Deere or International. I would like to paint it to prevent more rust, but I want to use the correct color. Thanks. Barb

Barb: Can you post a picture of this digger. I have a book on old IH diggers, but do not have photo posting capability. Even give me some details on wheels, hitches, etc. We'll try and get you on your painting project.
