Gap is somewhere around 1/32". If you can find a guy that knows what he is doing he can sharpen a knife so it will keep an edge for some time. Dull knife causes ragged bale edges and bananna bales plus works the heck out of the baler.

On the question of how sharp, when you can slice a piece of paper they are good. I personally would set the knife closer than Steve. I always made it operate like a pair of sissors, and sharpened knife daily.

Look in your book for the proper adjustment, but I think around 1/16 to 1/8 inch clearance. You can tell if the knife is dull or out of adjustment if your bales are rough or banana shaped on the knife side. If the knife is set proper, your bales should be nice and square on the sides.
