Hey guys, I just got home from a quick trip to New England, where I noticed that the Highway crews in New York were mowing the right of way with flail mowers. Here in the South the only thing you see is bush hogs. Since I have never seen, much less used a flail mower before, I was wondering what the difference is between the two. Why would you use one over the other. They both seem to do about the same job on the grass. Thanks for your input. Good Luck and God Bless, Tommy

And here in soutrhern Minnesota, they always used sickle mowers until 10 years ago - now it's all disc mowers. Never saw a flail or brush mower used in the road ditches 'here'.

Flail mower is a really good grass mower, but if in stalky or thorny stuff the flail mower will just skin it and leave it. I have an 88" flail mover and like the way it leaves grass, more mulched up and cleaner looking. A Brush hog with good blades will cut faster than a flail mower. I would really like to have a 10' brush hog for the first mow of the year ( tall heavy stuff ) and then use the flail mower after that for a cleaner look. Also, flail mowers are less likly to throw stuff at you, so they are better if around people, livestock or cars. Just my 2 cents worth about 1/4 that.

We have an old flail mower circa 1948 (it hasn't been used in a LONG while). From what I understand, flail mowers work by the pto turning a chain that turns the blades. The blades are just like those of a weed whacker. Hope this helps.

I think the issue here is safety. A single flail is measured in ounces, where as the blade of a bush hog is measured in pounds. When a flail hits a foreign object like a stone it will most likely bounce over it. On the other hand when the bush hog blade hits the stone, it will act more like Sammy Sousa's corked bat connecting with a baseball.
