Why do some cultipackers have what I believe are referred to as culti rings? What do they do?

I didn't know that you could buy packers without the sprocket style rings.

Also known as sprocket packers. I have an ancient 7' one that gets used once in a great while, and a newer 13' one that sees use frequently. The serrations granulate the soil surface and supposedly keep it from crusting as badly as a packer with smooth rib wheels alone would.

Another reason, is in a finally tilled up field, and sown to small seed. The field is ripe for erosion. The sharp rings are to create grooves that, if used correctly which is crossways of a slope, will help hold some water. The rings with the teeth in them, are for holding water in a pocklet next to the seed to enable it to get some water to start growing. n a downpour, the rain would just wash off quickly and perhaps the seed might not get enough. The pockerts also hold water to again stop waswhing. I have an old 3 section brillion packer with wood boxings instead of bearings. Use it whenever i sow seed
