Hey implement experts:
What would you expect to pay for a Hesston PT-7 haybine in good condition? I believe it's mid-1970 vintage. It's been shedded, but probably needs a new set of sections. The rollers look OK. It has funny rock guards on it, I believe there're called "stubby" guards - they're two-piece, top and bottom; they don't actually come to a closed "point" like on my sickle bar cutter. Some of those look like they need replacing, or at least re-bent. These are the guards that have been on it for years - are they good for grass/timothy hay?
Any other advice on this machine? Things to check/look out for? Thanks in advance,
- Jim H.

A really nice late-style PT-7 (which is what it sounds like you're looking at) will sell for around $1000 where I live, but good 7' machines are in demand here. Just saw a New Holland 478 in nice shape bring $3000 at a sale.

Thanks guys for the advice. It helps a lot! Now, can anyone tell me what one might be worth? It was built in the mid-1970's, I think.
Thanks again!

Jim we have a pt-7 we use it for everything from alfalfa to fescue most of our guards have been changed to one piece as we brake them. Does a good job as long a the sections stay sharp, you have to match your ground speed and pto speed to what your cutting, and when the dew sets in in the evening you just a well quit before you get mad. I think the rollers being worn causes most of them problems. Most of the wear items can be bought at the local Farm & Home. Hope that helps. Brian

i remember working on a cattle farm a few decades back. we bought a new jd moco that had the stubby guards. it was great for not clogging and could cut through already cut hay a second time when coming to end of field .most seem to like hesston. i would like to try the stackhand10 myself. i think some were saying something a while back about the location of the gear box i believe as being the right model to buy. you might check the archives. good luck and be safe
