I am looking at buying an IH #46 baler to replace my JD #14T that has knotter problems. I've heard
that the #46 was one of IH's better balers.
Any one out there have experience with them?
Thanks.

These old balers like the 46 and even the 430 need to run slow about 16 strokes per minute. Or run tractor just alittle past idle 1/4 to 1/3 way open. If they run to fast it doesn,t work well. This is why so many have trouble with ih balers. Been there done that first hand. And also KEEP twine knifes sharp and adjusted this will cause more problems than anything going on ih balers. If it don,t cut the twine they come untied. On the 46 baler i have had to put small washers behind twine knifes to move them far enough over to cut the twine. To many washers it cuts to quick ,not enough to late. Takes trial and error. Hope this is helpful.

The 'average' JD or NH baler will beat the average IH baler anyday. Both are better on knotters, IH has a long time, well deserved reputation for lousy ties. Just talking averages, individual units may vary.

If your 14T has knotter problems, FIX IT! Knotters require periodic attention whether on a 14t, a 46, or an Allis 303. The Deere 14t was a better baler than any IH baler ever built.

that's scary because i have worked behind both and owned a 14 T. i spent the money on the 14 T knotters but couldnt or didnt have the nerve to try to get too into the adjustments on the 14 T. but i got it so it would only miss 1 or 2 out of a hundred. capacity wasn't too bad as long as real dry and in a continuous rope. but i could tell time of day and dew fall with it. when i was reall smart and noticed it was that time of day i would just shut it down!saved a lot of grief.

The IH-46 is a good baler. Uncle bought one new in 1958 sold it at his farm sale in 2000. Looked like a new one for the most part no dents, paint good except where it was worn off. Only got wet the week of sale, in the barn every night. Some where around 800,000 -900,000 bales through it, maybe more. Keep good twine in it and keep knifes sharp. Always used sisal never plastic twine

I agree - I bale about 2000 bales per year with my 46 and it works well.

If everything is timed and in good congdition they will bale fairly good. If not they can b a pain just like the old 14 t.If twine bills are good they should be all right. The 430 is a better baler. just my opion.

both were good both had there faults 14 had low capacity but seemed to tie better than ih also the string was closer to the edge on an ih and pulled off quicker i agree if your going to upgrade go to a 43 435 440 as they dont bring much more than a 46 and are twice the baler dont rule out the new hollands unfortunatly it is cheaper to replace an old baler than to fix it now days good luck
