I have heard that New Idea use to make some of the IH balers. Anyone know what IH models are the same as the New Idea balers and their respective part numbers? Also are parts available for these balers? I have heard some not so good things about IH balers, but what about these New Idea built balers.

Lastly, wasn't New Idea bought out by Agco? If so were they making their own design baler at that time and how much of this baler is now the current New Idea baler.

Just courious, thanks in advance,
Bill

The 435 and 445 small squares were made by New Idea. I do not recall the NI model numbers offhand. Neighbor has a 445, does OK with it. Parts are still available. The current AGCO centerline balers are Hesston machines that are also sold as New Idea.

I think some Owatonna and IH balers were the same- fixed chamber, steel drums with dimples on the surface of the drums. With age, the dimples wear off and they don't do cornstalks well, especially wet stalks. Older NI and McGee balers were the same, I have a NI, and it is supposedly an open throat, but does not do stalks well. Fine with just hay. Mine is a 456; newer NI, gray ones, rented one once, and it did better, but not well, on cornstalks. Best cornstalk baler is NH with the chains, but they are rougher on alfalfa leaves. Too aggressive for one crop, just fine for another.
