Great mower and has been around for years. Just bought one myself. Very simple operation and not many parts to fret with. The square wooden rod (pitman arm) will break so have one for a spare. Takes about 15-30 minutes to replace so no major task there. There are different hookups for different tractors so be aware of that. The sickle needs to be in good condition to mow well with. That's the moving blade that is removable for replacement or sharpening. Cost of a new sickle for my 6 ft 501 was 50.00. And just a note the 7 ft was the same price. Keep the teeth on the bar in conditon and you'll have a nice machine that will cut a lot of hay. I think the last teeth I bought were around 3-4 dollars each. Tractor Supply has all the parts -- Ford dealership a little high on parts. ie they wanted $90.00 for sickle. Keep it oiled and greased and it will be around for another generation. They can be had for almost nothing if you are lucky at an auction but expect to pay between 200 - 500 dollars for one. I saw one go for $750 a couple weeks ago at auction and didn't understand why. While at auction look around for little boxes of stuff that may go with the mower like replacement blades or teeth and rivets, the little stop nut to install the blades. Basically anything you can find for it grab it. Can't think of anything else I can tell you but hope this helps and others can do likewise.

Pretty much sums it up good as can be. :)

I have a 501, plumb wore out all the parts. Got a 14-92 (something like that, not sure on the number) which is exactly the same mower, with a slightly longer pipe frame so a tractor with a wider stance could be used. Works great.

Sickle mowers have a bit of personality, you need a season under your belt to figure out the best way to tackle a job & weather conditions. Not hard to figure out tho.

The aftermarket spring loaded sickle hold downs work great ,cuts way better and cleaner. You should get a 501 manual, easily obtainable.Thats because depite being simple machines they have a suprising amount of setup points.I love my 501.It's mounted on a NAA.
