Baler shear pin

Dumb newbie question should be easy to answer...

I have yet to produce a bale of hay...still getting my equipment repaired and ready. Getting close though. May even get a few practice bales yet this year.

I have a John Deere 214WS wire-tie baler that's in excellent condition, but it needs a shear pin. Now for the question...do I just use a proper sized un-hardened bolt, or are shear pins special so that I need to buy it from the Deere dealer?

Thanks!

Thanks y'all! Just like asking what oil to use in the tractor - diverse opinions. It helps to know whatever I do, it will probably not be a disaster. I'll probably try JD first, then pick up some bolts at the hardware and try them.

That's probably the best way to go. you will have a reference point to go from by using the 'right' bolts, and then see if the cheaper hardware ones work as well. Just don't get grade 8 bolts - that would be a bit much! ;) I use regular hardware gr2 bolts from the hardware store. Altho it was handy to get a couple packs of bolts from the Quality store when it was selling out for 50% off, they worked well but don't know who would market them now... That was for my NH baler.

I have a JD 214T and always use the JD pins. My NH shear pins on the old baler and the NH manure spreader were on "odd" size, just a fraction off a standard size so I always used dealer bolts there too.

I used to use plain old #2 from the hardware store until I tried the regular shear bolts from the New Holland place. What a difference. The #2's would smear when they broke and sometimes be very hard to get out while the regular ones broke clean.

Chuck,

I use Grade 5 in my IH. My IH dealer didn't have any , told me they were #5 and sent me over to the grange for them.

new holland are a special bolt and i suspect yours is to for my baler its new holland. Yesterday baling sheared a bolt put a new one in and tried again sliped clutch turned flywheel back gave the tractor a little extra and sheared 2 bolt will down to one shear bolt and its sunday should have rembered the needles had started to come forward and the stop droped down pulled needles back and no more trouble its chheap insurance to have the correct bolt its a lot easier to replace that shear bolt then the needles

Grade 2 bolts always worked fine for me as shear bolts.
