HYDRAULIC QUESTION HELP!!

I have a Kuhn GMD 600 HD disc mower that has a single cylinder that has a single hydraulic hose hook up that is used to raise and lower the blade as well as provide minor position control of the blade height in relationship with the contour of the ground. The hydraulic cylinder is used to raise and lower the blade unit when making row end turns etc. However the manufacture indicates that in the lowered position the blade must float to compensate for undulations of the ground surface. My tractor is fitted with a three position, up, down and neutral, remote valve setup. Can someone explain to me what type of valve and plumbing changes that would be required to allow the blade float in the down position? I guess I don’t understand how you do this with a single action, single hose hookup cylinder.

I'm not familiar with your disk mower but I would expect there is some built-in looseness in the lift linkage to allow for the float. Perhaps also a heavy counter balance spring? the spring and linkage design should allow for the float if all is assembled and adjusted correctly.

no prob at all just hook up the hose to one side. If it don't work the way you want, try the other side. It will float because you have no down pressure.

Can only float by tying the control lever in the down position; with lever in neutral, oil is trapped in cylinder..... ....

Assuming the hyd cyl is closed (short) when the implement is down, the cyl will expand on it's own to 'float' longer, as there is no 'backpressure' on a single acting cyl. There may be some minor vacumn resistance inside the cyl, but not much.

However, some tractors have settings to make this work 'better' and allow true float. (Often a small valve to open or close.) Check the manual, or tell us what tractor/ hyd system we are dealing with.

If it is like the disc mowers I have used ( Vicon and Lely ) when the cutterbed is down the ram will be extended.
