I am not at all an expert on balers but fall into that group of part time people who do some hay each year for our few animals. It would appear that most of the baler questions come from people like myself. My first was a IH 45 and the bale sizes ran from 1'--5' thats when it tied one.Next was a NH 68, it worked ok but it just got old.Next and last a NH 273.I have had many of the same problems that are listed here and have had the experts come bend twist and adjust. It works just fine till after he is gone and then starts to miss bales all over again. In almost all cases the problem is that the twine is not new and of poor quality.Last year I had left it in the baler over the winter (covered) yet somehow water got into part of the unit of twine. It created weak spots. It would work just fine and then bang broken bale. The twine when glanced at looked new, but when looked at up close there was a line of dark on the inside of the spool. When ever it got to this area it would break. The old timer I bought my 68 from said ,take out the twine every year and store it where it is dry and do not be afraid to buy new every year if you need to.Oh ya buy only the best no cheap stuff.I put all new NH twine in at the start and perfect so far.It is the cheapest of all thing to replace and from my experience often the cause of most baler problems. Hope this might help some of you. dave

Jerry you are right I forgot to mention the wind row size. I baled yesterday and did not miss a bale but had different sizes in the wind rows and also then had different sizes in the bales and hard to keep tight bales.thanks dave

Good Idea. I ran an IH baler last year that I had trouble with. It was a real learning experience trying to get it to work after a few years of sitting. Espeacily since I haven't been around a little baler before. I learned the hard way. Tried the wrong twine to start with. Then I had trouble with the twine feeding through all the little holes. Then the knives wouldn't cut every time. And lastly I had trouble with the knotter because I cleaned it all up and overgreased it. I tie my rolls of twine up underneath a roof for 2 reasons. To keep it dry, and to also try to keep it where the mice and rats can't get to it. They can really mess up a roll too.

Dave, have a 65 and 273 . You talked bout missing bales. I found out ON MINE that when they start missing I replace the roller bearings on the knive arms and clean up the bill hooks. Also always after each baling I take the twine inside and keep it until next time. Keeps it clean, moisture free. Also the bill hooks need changed according to the twine used. Natureal uses reg bill hooks. The poly stuff uses alittle different bill hooks. Makes a world of difference on the knotters...
