We are having a problem getting the brush hog shaft attached to the PTO. Does the shaft stretch out to reach the tractor? We can't get ours to budge. HELP!!!!

Yes, it should slide out. I would use a penatating oil like PB Blaster - that is much better than WD40. If you can't get it out you can call around for a local welder. In my area there is a welder with experance with farm equpment who I would use. If the universal joints are in good shape it probably is worth being fixed.

Also use a hammer after drenching it in penitrating oil, but hit it at the base of the universal joint were it is welded to the shaft.

After you get it loose, pull it al the way apart and clean it down to the metal and greese it to death.

If none of the suggestions below work, you can hook the mower to your tractor; tie a come-along to the shaft and run the cable/chain underneath the tractor and hook the other end (of the come-along) to the front axle of the tractor; or if you don't have enough room to "work", continue out from under the front-end to a tree or something solid in front of the tractor.....

Been there, did that...worked great. I put a come-along on the shaft of the mower, and hooked other end to front axle of tractor. I used PB Blaster for 2 days, slowing increasing the pressure with the come-along over the 2 days, then POWEE it finally popped loose like it was never stuck. It was loaded with rust just like it was welded together. Wire brush and lots of grease fixed it up good!

The shaft is probably rusted if it has been sitting outside. I would soak it with oil or WD40 and then tap on it to try and get it to move. Once you get it to move a little keep putting oil on it and it will eventually come free.

Pump plenty of oil on shaft after getting them apart, grease it up so shaft slides in and out of tub freely. I had the same problem had to remove complete shaft and put in a vise after soaking with oil tapped with small sledge hammer. Most shafts have a greese fitting.

Of course they stretch to hook up to the tractor- otherwise they would have to be attached at the same time the rest of the machine is attached, and we don't have that many hands to line all that stuff up, plus, they need to stretch back and forth to allow for traveling over uneven ground. So you need to whack the pto knuckle (carefully) with a sledge hammer, to extend it far enough to attach to the pto. Check for flattened spots on the pto shaft, as well as damage to the outside pto shaft. If all is ok, maybe just some grease is needed to keep things sliding as they should. Otherwise, it is repair or replace.

The pto shaft should slide in the middle to make it longer. If the sahft has been bent sometimes that is a problem as well as if it hasn't been greased.
