What and How should you check and inspect when looking to buy a used sickle mower?. What differentiates a good used mower from a bad (needs lots of repair) used mower?

Thanks and Best Regards to All.

Check all points where it looks like there may be a bearing, grab the associated parts and wiggle and/or lift/push on them to see if bearings may be loose or out. Look for major weld on castings or what looks like a major component. Small welds are usually no problem. Look for cracks/splits on any gearcase that may be there. Don't be too concerned with a broken pitman or a broken guard or two or a nicked/cracked section or two. These are usually normal maintainence items. check belts or chains to see if they run straight. If noticibly out of alignment, probably have a bearing out or a bent shaft. If your looking at a newer 'pitmanless' mower, watch the wobble box at the sickle head. repair of an IH wobble box will set you back about $1100. If you are looking at an older 3pt or semi-mount, make every attempt to get 'all' the brackets for mounting it. Try to get an owners manuel if you can. Watch the drag bar when it is raised and out in cutting position, can have/should have a bow from end to end, stay away if it has a 'twist' in it. When the mower is in what looks like attached position, the bar should be out to the right of it, not way forward (leading) or way back (trailing).

First, look at overall condition, and inspect knife, and cutterbar for bowing or damage that might have been fixed. Inspect for signs of extreme wear or abuse.Secondly, operate the mower if possible. If not possible to operate the mower, then GOOD LUCK!!!!
