A follow up to the posts below:
How do you get to the shaft itself with penetrating oil etc. when the @#$%^&* "rotating" shield is still on it?

I had the same problem on an FMC mower I got---the shaft was frozen, and the plastic safety shield didn't have a grease fitting. My solution was to take a 4" grinder and slit the plastic shield, which allowed me access to the shaft. I still had a hard time getting the two halves apart (turns out the square shaft was bent slightly), but then, I cleaned and greased everything, and left the guard off. I know that's not the "correct" thing to do, but makes maintenance easier. I priced a new shaft set-up at the local Tractor Supply and at $110, I can live with my set-up. My thinking is that you're not supposed to be fooling around in the area of the PTO when it's turning anyway.

I had a old stuck shaft. Used two trees about 20 feet apart tied some heavy rope around the trees so I would not hurt them, I used a chain and come-along to pull the shaft apart. Had to use a hammer and some PB-Blaster and she freed right up.

If you have the shaft removed, you can look down each end. Some have an open end you can pour the oil down.

I have _never_ seen a grease zerk on the side of a pto shield, that would clearly defeat the point of the shield! :)

If your shaft is extended some, you can take apart one end of the shield & collapse it, gaining access to some of the shaft.

I have the same deal on a wood splitter, need to get a shaft apart..... And it's totally compressed of course.

I had a Bondiolli ( triangular shaped ) PTO shaft on my brush-hog that was frozen. I removed it from the machine, secured one end to a post with a chain and attached the other end to my Cub Cadette lawn tractor. The two halves pulled apart and we cleaned and greased them by hand as there is no zerk for grease. Now we grease it by hand once a year & everything works fine.

Paul I can not say as if I have seen a zerk on a PTO shield either but I have seen many sheild with holes in them so you can turn them around and line them up with the zerk that lubricates the shaft.

Actually I have seen a zerk on a PTO shield, I don't mean a little plastic nozzle thing that you normally see on the ends of 'non rotating ' guards, but a proper metal zerk. I am going to be racking my brains now all day thinking about what machine it was on !

Remove the rotating shield. Some have a snap ring, visible through several slots in the shield, and can be popped loose with a screwdriver. Others may have the snap ring visible near the knuckle. Everything goes together somehow- the trick is to find out how fiendish the engineers were who 'designed' it. Some of them are committed to make it difficult- others should just be committed.

Tim, can you rotate the shaft around and find a grease zerk? Try taking the zerk out and putting penetrtating fluid in that way.

I have gone through the same thing with some neglected implements I've bought. No amount of penetrating oil or even heat would break it apart.I have an engine puller[cherry picker] hooked one end of shaft on the bottom ,other on top and simply pulled it apart.
