My 268 New Holland square baler won't let go of the inside knot unless I make the bales so loose that it's just a step above using a pitchfork. That silver duck bill looking thing holds on to it. As the next bale starts, it breaks the twine. Both sides appear to be working the same when I manually spin the shaft. My new manual will be here in 10-14 days. Any suggestions in the meantime would be greatly appreciated.

Remove the bolt to the rear and right of the knotter which is giving you problems. You will then be able to swing the entire knotter up. As it swings up, the bill hook and knife arm run through the exact sequence they go through to tie a knot. You can watch the knife arm to see that it comes in 'contact' with the back of the bill hook. If it does not, the knots will hang. You should also check to see that the wiper part of the knife arm (stripper flange )goes past the end of the bill hook between 3/8 and 1/2 inch at it's farthest point of travel.

Hopefully you didn't just start bending the knife arm in everywhich direction. If they are bent too badly, it's easier to pay $40 for a new one than to try to bend it back to it's original shape.

If you have to bend it, remove the bill hook cam, remove the pin holding the knife arm, and as the knotter swings up you can remove the knife arm.

You should only tighten the spring/nut on the bill hook cam until 2-3 threads are showing.

Knots will also hang on the bill hook if the twine discs are not advanced properly. If they are retarded too far, the tails of the knots will be too long, and will hang on the hook.

Another common cause of knots hanging on the billhook, twine tension too low. Be careful if you have to resort to bending the knife arm. If you bend it too close to the billhook it can strike the back of the billhook, and break the knotter casting. Test it a few times 'by hand ' before you try it with the tractor PTO.

Its probably a combinatin of Val and TP's posts- I think the bill hook tension is the nut with the spring under it- but without the manual I can't tell you which way is which to adjust. Also check to see that the sweeper is contacting the bottom of the bill hook to push the knot off. Adjust by bending it (I know- its cast iron, and everybody knows your not supposed to bend cast iron- but grit your teeth, use a long enough "cheater" that you can control the amount of bend, and pray).

Don't be afraid to bend on the cast iron wiper arm that wipes the knot off of the bill hook.. It is very forgiving. In another words, it is made to bend. I know it sounds strange but it bends.. I had a NH technician out a few years back and I couldn't believe how much he bent the arm and it didn't break.. So don't be afraid to bend on it,, it's made to bend for the proper clearance. It has to rub on the bill hook to wipe off the knot.. Hope this helps,,

check the arm under the knotter that pushes the knot off. The arm should be rubbing the bottom of the knotter (not sure of the exact names of the various components). Also check the round brass ball type roller. If it has flat spots on it, it doesn't allow things to move as far as they should.

Our 269 was doing the same thing..... ....The tention was too tight on the bill causing the knot not to release..... ..The bill hook might have sharp edges that may need the file taken to them..... I would buy a manual from NH or find one on ebay for it, They help out alot!
