Haybine getting plugged

I've got an IH 816 sickle-type haybine that keeps getting plugged up while cutting alfalfa. It gets a large clump stuck in the rollers, sickle and out the side. This is occuring on the end 12-18" on the far-side of the unit. Does anyone have any ideas what might be the problem? Could the rollers be set too loose? Or too tight? The sickle sections seem sharp, but I haven't replaced any yet. The rest of the sickle and rollers don't get plugged at all.

Thanks!

In the manual for my IH 990, it says to change the guards if that happens on that side of the machine. Also could you be driving too fast?

Thanks for the information. It doesn't seem to matter if I go normal speed or real slow it still gets plugged up. Do you know what the clearances are supposed to be for the guards? What's involved with changing the guards? This is my first cutting with this machine and don't yet have a book for it.

The sickle sections MUST rub on the guards. Its a scissors cut, not an inertia cut. And the bottoms of the guards (used to have ledger plates there) must have square edges.

sEE IF THE REAL PULLS THE ALFAFA UP TO THE ROLLERS THERE MAY BE SOME PARTS MISSING OR BROKEN ON THE REAL.

I used to have that problem with my Heston PT-10. I don't have that problem since I adjusted the guards in that region so they were against the sickle sections. An 1/8" gap is enough to keep from cutting alfalfa, and just bending it and making a mess. I had to add shims to the guard mounts in some places (and when I checked the book it called for them too).

The other thing that will still plug it is to run a part of a windrow through it again, or to let the sickle hit a windrow already cut.

Do you still have all the pickup fingers on the reel in front of that part of the cutterbar?

I should have mentioned, this model doesn't have a reel. Rather it has about a 4" roller that runs in front of the sickle. It's height can be adjusted.
