I currently have a bushhog, when cutting the grass with it, it tops the soil in places. I've tried chains, top link adjustments, etc. but in places it still dig into the ground. I have heard that a finishing mower is more what I need to cut the grass. Now I can't use a belly mower because I use my tractor for other things besides mowing. I know they have pull behinds, I'm just curious as to what the difference is between a finishing mower and a bush hog? What is different about the finishing mower whereas it will not top the ground in places? Plus is there a different in appearance between a bushhog and a finishing mower? As you can tell by my questions I know very little about these devices, so any information would be good.

Thanks,

Bush hogs have two big blades and are for cutting heavy brush, the blades swing so hitting a stump or something solid doesn't tear up much. Finish mowers have several (usually 3) blades which don't swivel and are designed for cutting grass. Finish mowers are more like lawn mowers but can still scalp uneven ground. I would recommend a finish mower with front and rear leveling wheels. Hope this helps.

Thanks for your response Redneck, I take it that a finish mower is basicly like a lawn mower without the handle, a body on four wheels. Yea I think that would work better then just the one wheel behind. Looks like it could be adjusted.

Thanks again.

On the ones I've seen, the four gauge wheels are pretty easy to adjust (just move a spacer). I use a 6-foot King Kutter finish mower behind a 2N. I mow in second gear - does a pretty good job.
