Hello everyone, I have a question for the group. I remember growing up we used a old tractor on an apple farm I worked at that had to be started using a hand crank. I have a 1950 chevy pickup that I bought from a farmer awhile back. I have a 1939 chevy engine in it now. My question is concerning this engine. The fron pulley (crank pulley) has a center fitting that looks like a hand crank could go onto it to start it up. There is also a hole in the sheet metal bellow my radiator that looks like it was there for a hand crank to pass through to the crank pulley. Does anyone know if I could get a tractor hand crank for this engine. Was this chevy engine used on tractors? The reason a am wondering is that my truck has a kick starter and is always so hard to start I think it may be easier with a hand crank. Well, any help would be appreciated. TIA. Rene Correa

I have a 1952 Chevy truck which is basically the same truck which you have. Yes, you could get a hand crank for these trucks, but why bother? If the truck is hard to start now, getting a hand crank won't change anything. You'll only wear yourself out trying to crank it and end up saying words that ladies aren't supposed to say. Spend your money getting the engine tuned up. Unless the engine is worn out, it should start pretty easily. You might consider getting it changed over to a twelve volt system if it is still on the six volt system. My truck is on a twelve volt system with an alternator and usually starts right up. If you want to keep the six volt system, have the starter checked out to make sure that it is in good condition, make sure all electrical connections are in good shape and that the battery is good and hot. Good luck.
