I am replacing everything on my NH 451 cutterbar (Knives, guards, bolts, clips, wear plates). I tried to set the hold down clips by bending them to a space of .015" (I got them between .010" and .020")between the knives and the hold down clips. I must have taken each one off 20 times,Lol. Am I tightening the bolts too tight, I just make them snug but not super tight. According to my manual, my guards should be bent up, I tried and and NO LUCK. There is no way that I can bend them up. My next problem is I can move the knives cold but couldn't when they are warm from use. I tried it out on some tall lawn grass (may use it for some second cutting), it cut ok but had some plugging. Any ideas what I should do? I am stumped. It cuts but I want to get it in really good shape!!! Thanks.

John, Paul is right. Hold down clips should be adjusted on the bar. But, if you got them reasonably close your way, that's ok too. John, in fine grass, I have found that the double hold down clip used at the far outside guards works really well for all clips except for the far inside clip that needs to be higher. I hate to ask you to spend a little more money, but they really work. If you look at the double clip, it is much narrower than the regular clip. This allows the material to flow through the guards better. Also, is your pitman area in good shape? Make sure the stroke is complete and you don't have play in the stroke which means the knife would not be traveling back and forth as far as it should be. Steve

Sickle bar mowers never cut short fine grass without plugging. In my experience.

Always set the hold downs with a hammer. Whack it. if it's real close - good. If not, whack it again. Never took one off to adjust. It's not rocket science, just want a good close fit. With this method, there will always be a tiny bit of gap, won't get too tight.

I'd guess some are a little too close if it doesn't turn by hand when warm. It will probably wear itself into shape, you can leave it if it's not a bad issue.

Guards are supposed to be maliable cast iron, whack on them & they bend. Never did well with that either. Dad made a bending bar, seemed to help. Just a big long shaft with a U iron welded to one side. If it takes a lot of movement, he would heat with a torch at the base of the guard & then bend.
