Hydraulic valve operation

I am trying to find out some info on why the valve that I use for my loader is not working to operate my remote cylinder. I have one-way hyd. on the loader and I added another hose and coupler to the other working port on the valve hoping to be able to unhook the loader and hook up a remote cyl. to the control valve. As near as I can tell the valve says Glesen minneapolis in an oval pattern by the control lever. It says 077 4 by the first working port and 550 between the two working ports. Can anyone tell me if I can do something to this valve to make it function as a two-way valve?
thank you for your time.

Micheal

The valve you have is a Gresen. I believe it is an SP 3 Way 3 position valve made for controlling single acting cylinders. If your loader cylinders have only one line each they are single acting. This valve, if it indeed is a 3 way, will not operate a double acting cylinder as that requires a 4 way valve (3 ways have 3 ports pressure tank and one work port / 4 ways have 4 ports pressure, tank, and two work ports).

functions or what is the purpose of it

Hey Jack, Thank you for the info. I have not disassempled the valve, but I had what appeared to be two work ports on the top of the valve with one capped off, that's why I thought I may be able to use it to control a two way cylinder. I guess it may be simpler to buy a two-spool (one for my single-acting loader and one for my dual-acting remote) out of Northern Hyd. or something, maybe. Thank you for your time and info.

Be sure that two spool valve is set to take a single acting cylinder. If your hydraulic system is open center and you hang a single acting cylinder on a valve made for a double acting cylinder, you end up stopping the oil flow from the pump (and forcing it through the pressure relief valve) when you try to release the pressure from the other port to let the cylinder return. That's not a problem on a closed center system, but you probably don't have that on an external loader system.
