What are the differences between the 14T and 24T John Deere balers? Thanks. Al - who, as of now has nothing to bale

I've read that 14 & 24T's were built in heavy duty versions and called 214 & 224T's. I do know of a 224T around here and hope to talk the owner out of it someday. I don't know just what is beefed up on the 200 series. I'm still trying to wear out a 14T that has likely baled something like 100 k bales!

If you get a chance to compare it to yours, I would be interested in what you find. I have a 224T baler and have found it to be a great machine but don't have access to a 24T to compare.

I ran a 14T for about 25 years and a 24T for the last 7 or 8. The 24 has a little more capacity I'm told, but until this year it made little difference with my Wis engine powered baler. This summer I mounted a second engine on it, so now I can keep with the PTO guys. The righthand wheel is under the auger housing, the needle brake is on the knotter shaft, the tucker blade is no longer ball-and-socket driven, the auger is belt-driven, the twine comes out from under the box cover instead of over the top.The knotter trip is different too. That's all I can think of now. On the minus side, the hitch pole no longer snaps into highway position by itself. You have to lay on the ground to put a pin in. HTH

The 24T (1960's) is a refinement of the older 14T (1950's). I've run a 14T for a lot of years and 1000's of bales after I bought it about 20 years ago at auction cheap because the local opinions said it was worn out. It has made a huge number of bales over it's lifetime I'm sure. I stacked wagons behind one as a young guy and we put up umpteen thousand bales with it including custom work. We broke quite a few shearpins because of heavy windrows and no live pto. It's likely outdated if you're putting up lots of hay but for smaller acreages it gets the job done. I've become so used to it and most of it's quirks that I hate to retire it. From what I've read on this site others seem to agree that the 24T is a better machine. I hope to "upgrade" mine to a 24T should I find one at the right price. I'm sure others can tell you the exact differences although I understand the knotters are virtually identical.

I have a 224T that keeps breaking the twine after 5 or so bales. Windrow side no trouble. other side always a problem.
