I am having a hard time finding sandblasting media. The silica sand problem is resulting in the rental business folks discontinue handling units/material. Talked with a firm today and the walnut hull sounds good. Also aluminum oxide. Now supplier in the La Crosse, Wisconsin area that I can find. Any suggestions? Thanks

There are many places that sell media, but shipping and high costs make it tough to justify. This place I am posting developed "Skatblast" which is a media made of crushed glass from windshields.

I have to agree with Robert on every point that he made!!

Try to find Black Beauty. I've been using it for a number of years and it is far better than sand and not very expensive. Sharp, aggresive, no silica (but always use a respirator anyway)!! If you are unable to locate a source, email back to me and I'll get the producer's name off of a bag. Only down side to using Black Beauty is that it is indeed black! It can make a mess on the nice new driveway or on sweetie's new light beige carpet!!!

A blast media that works as well or better than sand is Black Beauty, which is coal slag---very hard and sharp, and no dust from the media itself. You might try talking to someone in your area that does sand blsting to see what they use.
The dust associated with using silica is as much the result of the media fracturing on impact as much as fine material.
As someone else stated, use a good respirator, NIOSH rated to 95.

Try talking to a concrete mixer or concrete block supplier. I get mine ( 3 grades) @ a local concrete block / brick maker here in Wausau.

We use the coarse grade of silica sand in our business which doesn't have the ultra fine airborne silica associated with the health problems. I don't know if you can find it but Zircon sand might be an option. It is normally used in processes where molds are made from it and shapes poured. It does cost around 20 cents in bulk normally though. Irregardless of what you use, always use a respirator or at a minimum a good fitting mask.

Last stuff I got was some glass beads from my local NAPA store. It is not as abrasive as silica sand but works fine allaround.
