I need to purchase a rotary cutter for my JD820 (3cyl 30hp) and Kukbota L2250 (22.5hp), I think I will go for a 5' medium duty, but there is a lot to chose from. Who is better Woods or Brush Hog OR ?? It seems each brand has a number of different models which are the same size. I have 13 acres of woods and rocks, about 2 acres of grass to cut. I would like it to be the last one I buy.

Another thing, look how easy it is to take the blades off the different models too!!! Woods is "miles" ahead in this area!!!!

I'm still hearing of problems with the Bush Hog "made in China" gear boxes too!!!

I used a King Kutter for a few hours on "my tractor" a couple months ago, compared to my Woods it didn't mow near as well, and the owner didn't think much of it either. I was mowing thick 5'+ tall weeds with it. Robert

If you've got small trees (over 1" dia) or stumps, shy away from King Kutter and Howse in the 5' and 6', the kind usually at farm stores. They're dandy for cleaning up smooth pastures & weeds, but the blade mount & jumper are on the light side for mowing in the rough. I have an older 5' KK bought at auction before I knew better; had to build my own blade carrier 'cause the old one was bent & cracked at the blade bolts. Decent deck & gearbox, but flimsy blade carrier. Drilling holes to shed water works fine, but don't put a hole over the blade carrier or it'll rust up terribly and you'll never get the blade bolts off or get it off the gearbox.

You'll have to stick with a light weight unit with your tractors or your front end will be in the air all the time and your Kubota doesn't have the power for any heavy brush. I'd get the dealer to let me try one first if you can. Also price a Land Pride as they are a good cutter and well constructed. You may have to drill some holes in the deck to drain water off of any of them. Good luck.....

I'll have to disagree with you on the these statements. I've been using a 5' Bush Hog for 15+ years behind a B8200 Kubota (about 16.5 pto hp). Front loader is more than enough counter weight. With the 9 forward speeds, you can always find one that will do the job, might not do it at 5 mph, but I haven't been stopped yet, nor have I had a minutes trouble from either the Bush Hog or the Kubota.

It is no secret that Woods is in very poor financial position. The quality of their cutters is not what it once was. The market share is 40% of what it was 12 years ago. Can you see the picture?

Either Woods, Sidewinder, or Bush Hog. I had a Rhino and hated it, huge POS. May have just been a bad batch. Bought a Bush Hog brand 5 yrs ago and so far so good, it was about $3000 cheaper than the Woods and included stump jumpers. Got an old 8' Sidewinder that was built in the 50's. Still going strong. I use it in really rugged terrain because with the pneumatic drive instead of a gear box less to break. I figured they were out of business but saw them last year at the National Farm Machinery Show.

There is no gearbox on a pneumatic drive cutter. The blades are mounted to a large disk which is mounted on a large spindle. The disk is driven by a heavy single rib tire mounted on a shaft between two pillow block bearings. The pto shaft is connected to the forward end of this shaft. Between the disk and the wheel there was quite a flywheel effect. In the days before live or independant ptos and overun clutches they would really shove a tractor when the clutch was depressed. There was a slot in the top of the deck that allowed the tire to to drive the disk. All of the units I have seen or used were of the 'Sidewinder' brand.

Here is a picure of our tire drive sidewinder mower. We have had ours for over 10 years and it's been used hard on tractor's that would destroy any other mower this size but we've only had to replace one drive tire and two sets of blades on this one. They are a very heavy built mower designed to mow off anything your tractor will push over.

Woods is good, Bush Hog is good, Rino is good, and several others. I have a 6 ft. heavy duty Bush Hog which is all they built then I think serial # 13?? still going if needed. I have a 15ft. bat wing Rino like it fine, my Uncle has 15ft. bat wing Woods loves it. As far as a 5 ft. medium duty I say one with best price.

I've had both and used several others. "If" i was buying new today, i'd buy a Woods Brushbull model!! Woods cutters have been the best i've owned or used to date. I have two Woods rotary cutters right now, and they both have been very good cutters.

BTW, i think the Brushbull will shed the water best too!

I own 5' & 6' woods & can't believe they can be beat. 5' one must be 40 yrs old. dad bought it in the sixties.
