I just purchased an old #5. It has a drawbar mount. I have a JD 420W that does not have a drawbar. Does anyone have any good ideas on how to rig an attachment?

Another question - I have a stand of alfalfa, timothy and orchard grass. Would it harm the growth potential to give it a cutting now or should I just leave it until SPring?

First: Get you a manual. Go to ebay and find one that isn't going for an arm and leg. Type in "5 mower" and search.

Second: Block the mower, per the manual, behind your tractor.

Third: Fab yourself something that works. Hire a welder if need be. And, if you value your fingers watch how you raise the bar!

Alan if your 3 pt will go wide enough you can take the drawbar hitch off your mower and put bolts through where the hitch was and bolt to tug arms will work fine. I have done this on A NO.5 that i had.

I would make a hitch to fit the lower links on the 3 point. I have seen a couple made this way and they would very well and are easy to hook up.

Do not cut alfalfa within about two weeks of when you expect a killing frost. After the frost you can cut it any time. Years ago I was cutting a load of greenchop to feed the herd everyday with a flail chopper. Next spring I could tell exactly where I was when the frost came. No alfalfa up to the point where it frosted. Good luck. Ed
