I have a 2 year old King Kutter 7' 60 HP gear box brush hog (3 point hitch). Last summer was cutting away and hit a log. That log shot out the front of the brushhog and to close to my head. I had seen some stuff shoot out the front before, but was always at ground level.

This got me thinking, I need to put some sorta chain gards on the front of this thing. I have a few questions.

1) Should I interconnect the chains or just let them hang independently?

2) How thick of chain do I need?

3) Why were chains not installed on my unit when purchased? These things are dangerious.

4) Is there some sweet spot angle I need to be cutting at that will eliminate my front projectiles?

Before I go and start hacking up my unit, I thought I would see what you all have done. Thanks.

I've hit plenty of garbage with a WD45 and a 6' "brush hog", and have yet to be zinged by anything coming from the front. I have, however, thrown LARGE chunks of wood, a piece of steel used on my tractor for sway controll (that'll be bolted on from now on) and plenty of other misc dangerous items out the back. I think the secret is to have the back higher than the front. That gives it a natural escape route in the event you do hit something.

On my 45 though, the front of the mower is sitting nearly straight down from me, and the piece would have to take an impossible route to get to me. Maby that is the blessing. Try raising the rear a notch or two and see what happens.

Glad you brought the subject up. It reminded me of getting hit acouple times this last summer from flying objects out the front. Reminds me to take care of this while mower is not in use.

Thanks

We used chain for a while but now we use 1" thick conveyor belt bolted solidly across the front and in the back. The back piece has slots cut in it to allow more flex. We would have to replace the sections of chain quite often. I guess they were flying some place too.

I have a 6 ft. Bush Hog brand serial # 13** , it is old my Dad bought it in the 50's I have a factory sheild that bolts to the axle even then I have had rocks bounce off the tractor some where in front of me and almost hit me bush hogs are dangerous. I had a freak thing happen a few years ago, I was going to mow where I stacked round bales, I had the 6ft. hooked to the 460 with a wide front end. I ran over a hedge post about 2 1/2 inch in dia. the post flipped up and landed on the back axle slid up the axle with the point in the back of my leg about 1/2 between my ankle and knee I did not see what had happened it pushed my leg up and pinned it to the steering wheel bent the steering wheel, lucky for me it also knocked the shifter into neutral. The post was at such an angle I still could not see it the tractor stopped and I was thinking what in H is going on. I had my leg x rayed it was not broke, but I carried a mark on the back of my leg for years.

I also had a bad experience with a King Kutter Brushhog. I pull a 6 footer' with my 3000 Ford. This past Summer, it tossed out the front a stick, about 1 1/4" dia by 20" long and hit my right leg, I still have a 8" mark from it. This type Brushhog sure spits out more debree from the front. I will sure make some type of chain guard and install it before I do any brush-hogging this spring! BadMoon

I had a similar experience a long time ago, when I was a kid. I was running a JD 2010 with a Bush Hog brand rotary mower/brushog. The blade hit a a cannonball size ( maybe a little bigger ) round rock, it came flying out the front of the mower and whizzed by my head, not sure how close, but I heard the noise, and then watched it clear the 40' high treeline as it was hurled into the next field. I unhooked that Bush Hog and put on our Ford version WITH guards immediately. At the time I was young, say 13, 14, so those guards not there and the task I was doing, heavy brushogging 50 acres of fields let go for several years, it did not occur to me that they should be in place. I'll NEVER forget that little incident.

Glad you brought it up, it's a good warning to anyone who is not aware. I've got a Rhino SE-6 that does a pretty good job, and does not seem to send things out the front, but why take chances, gotta have some kind of a guard !

How high do you have it? I know alot of people like to cut pretty high. I always cut ptetty low and it helps with the stuff flying out. I have two differnt bruch hogs. One King Cutter and the other one is a Woods. The woods shoots way more out the back then what the King Kutter does. Plus the Woods is a little better built in my mind and will last a alot longer.

I make chain gurds from old salvaged or yard sale chain. I like 5/16's the best, 3/8's works too. Cut em about 5 to seven links long and weld em to a piece of angle iron to form a curtain and bolt it to the front of the machine. An old piece of belting around the rear works good also.As with everything these are considered OPTIONAL equipment.

These things can kill you. People who don't buy these with a front guard of one type or another usually are going to use them for a mower and not for bush hogging. But as with any machine of this type whether mowing or bush hogging you have to be careful.
The chain guards are the best and they should be hung separately to the level of the cutter bottom taking care that they won't reach back to the blade. They should be about 1/2 inch apart to be most effective. For some reason maybe the design of the cutter shroud King Kutter seems to be more prone to debris discharge in the front. Good luck..

I've never had a lot of projectiles out of the front unless I was backing up. Just for safety sake I did put a 'shield' on the wings of my batwing. Chains were available as an option but I used a pc. of old 7" wide round baler belt bolted accross each of the bolt holes.

I've seen a lot of tractors with brush gaurds on them because of that, The 190XT I sold this summer had one that was very good it had a screen that sat just behind the driver and was very heavy but thats the best I have to offer
