Folks, my father-in-law has a 5 foot Bush Hog brand rotary mower that is probably about 20 or so years old. It is made with a square deck, and there is a chain from somewhere on top to the deck body that allows the deck body to pivot up. (I am going by my bad memory here) It also has a tail wheel made from the compressed nylon (whatever that stuff is made of). The gear box has sheared the shear bolt, and it also needs the lower oil seal replaced. I am sure I can get the seal from a local Bush Hog dealer, but what size shear bolt does it need and where the heck is it?? I think its in front of the gear box right? At least, my Land Pride 4 foot 'hog has a metal hood that I can tilt up and see where my shear bolt is. His is not so obvious. How hard is it to get the stump jumper off to replace the seal? How hard to replace the seal itself?? Is this a job for professionals only? Thanks for any help.

I have found that using grease instead of oil makes the gearbox last longer and stay cooler. Oil can leak through a bad seal but grease is certainly less likely. I have a bush hog that I can't get the bolts off of and I had a good friend and farmer who bush hog professionally (using his own tractor and bush hog) tell me this secret. Believe me, it works.

I've got a Bush Hog Brand Razorback(light duty) that I bought a few months ago. The shear pin is a 7/16", 3 1/2" long bolt that goes in directly in front of the gear box, where the drive line attaches to the gear box. Changing the seal shouldn't be much trouble, other than some stuck bolts. With a hog that old, especially if they have never been taken off, they might have to be cut off. When you do put new ones back on, use anti-seize, trust me, it could make life a lot easier down the road. Over all, if your mechanically sound, you shouldn't have any trouble doing it. Hope this helps. Casey

If I remember right my shear pin is a 1/2".
It is not a real hard job t replace a seal. once you get the stump jumper off and get the gearbox loose it should go pretty easy. be sure to drain as much fluid out of the box before taking it off(otherwise it could get REALLY messy)
