Well I'm wanting to clean up my baler that I just picked up. What's everyone's thought on power washing a baler? That's after all the loose chaff is blowen out with shop air. What about putting some degreaser on the knotter assembly? Just looking for everyone's opinion on cleaning up a baler and preping for some new paint.

Matthew

We power wash our balers at the end of each haying season. Between cuttings we just use shop air to blow down (good) during regular maintenance. Every morning in the field knotters get brushed and cleared and any fittings that look like they need a shot get one. We also check them often when running to make sure you don't build up interference (especially in very dry hay). Bale chambers and knotters as well as everything else get the power wash. Knotters get light oil and a clean shot of grease through the fittings and clean up any excess. Degreaser doesn't seem to hurt it but normally we only use water.

Yeah, I've powerwashed mine - got rid of stuff that built up probably for years! (Previous owner) After washing, it is a good idea to thorughly grease all bearings and fittings, to clear water out ot them. Also as suggested, oil other places where rust can build up.

Just be very sure that you have ALL the chaff and residue blown away before power-washing. By that,I mean EVERY HIDDEN,ENCLOSED AREA because that's where rust through will start if not cleaned. After drying, spray everywhere with a diesel fuel/oil mix and you'll be amazed how long these balers will last.

I've got a 336 JD my dad bought new. It has only been wet 2 times since new (weatherman lied both times :-)). I tend to not wash my equipment (and I absolutely dont get my square baler wet intentionally). If it needs a good cleaning, since it is a new purchase, I'd probably try to steam clean, sand, paint, grease and oil, then try to never get it wet again. Some folks wash theirs all the time and seem to do alright. For me I grease everything per the owners manual and spray WD 40 on the polished parts of the knotters when I finish each day.

I keep my baler pretty clean. I hit it heavy pretty much everywhere but the knotters. I clean these too but only to get the excess grease off and the dirt and chaff stuck in it. I just use the hose spray on this part. Let it dry in the sun then tarp it and park it in the barn.
