My cousin and I figured how to rivet the ledger plates on my NH 451 sickle Bar mower and it wasn't that hard. I want to pass it on and thank everyone for replying before. On the swath board part we took it off the cutter bar. Next I drilled 2 holes opposite where the 2 rivits go (Holes same size as the rivet holes, I drilled them through the 2 rivet holes). I took the 2 rivets, prick punched the center of the heads then took my smallest drill bit and made the dimple just a little bigger. Next I put a roll pin punch verticle in my vise, put the punch through one of the holes I drilled so it is opposite the rivet head. The little tip of the roll pin punch goes just enough into the dimple in the rivet head to keep it from moving. The rivet now had solid backing ,so I then used my ball- peen hammer and regular punch and did the rivets. An extra set of hands helped to hold the swath board part. It was actually pretty easy!!! I must have went through 12 rivets before I figured this method out. I was ready to have it welded as was suggested.

Sounds like a lot of fussin for such a simple task. There is a tool made for reomoving and installing sickle sections in the field. We used to change sickles twice or even three times a day when running from can to can't see. Dad would sharpen them after milking each day. I have also seen a guy weld a small piece of iron on the mower frame to use as an anvil.

How do you sharpen the cutters? I have the manual but it doesnt show the how-to's. I have a number 5 JD caster wheel mower. I would love to sharpen it before I use it for the first time.

It takes a special grinding wheel and I haven't seen one in YEARS. I is about 5" Dia. with a double bevel to fit between the sections. You sharpen one side of one section and the opposing side of the adjoining one. Dad's was mounted on a mandrel and driven by an electric motor and a belt. A sharp sickle sure takes the side drag out. Maybe a 4" hand held grinder would touch em up ok.

I wasn't refering to the sickle sections but to the 2 ledger plates on the inner and outer shoe. On my mower they use a countersunk rivets. I know what the tool is but didn't want to spend $60 for it and I am not certain it would work on the end shoe. If I had the tool I would have tried it.
