What is the correct way to size a hitch pin to an implement and tractor drawbar so it has enough flex and allows movement but is not too loose? What types of pins does everybody use? or does everyone just use an old bolt?

Depends on the size and weight of the implement. With large disks round balers etc. We use about a 7/8" diameter. On things like v wheel rakes I do not recomend filling the hole up. This will give some flex when going over hills, about 1/2" diameter. I have heard of folks using a large pin and breaking the bolts that hold the tongue to the tool bar.

always use the largest pin which will pass through both the drawbar and the implement hitch. Be sure to secure with a clip. I worked on a farm years ago where the farmer would use railroad spikes and old bolts for pins. after they became bent i would have to beat them out with a hammer. Always buy hitch pins and take care of them. i attach pins to implements with a short piece of chain so they will be returned with implement.
