What type of cut does a flail mower provide? I know they are suppose to chop vegation into to small particles but is the finished look more like a brush hog or does it offer a more manicured look? They must be safer than a brush hog! yes or No. Thank You.

I've got a flail mower and a brush hog. My brush hog will mow virtually anything I can push over with the deck. I will not work as a finish mower because it leaves rows of mown grass in piles at the sides of the deck.
A flail mower will chop vegetation into small peices. It will not mow anything woody. It just strips off the covering and leaves it in the ground. I use mine as a finish mower and it does quite well. They use more PTO power than a bush hog or finish mower.

I also have both, the brush hog was great in the initial clearing, cut up just about everything. This year was the first with the flail mower. It does an excellent job on the grass. It really is a finishing mower.

Picked it up used, was a lot of work in changing/sharpening blades, but the result I am more than happy with...

What the cut looks like depends in large part on what type of flail chopper it is. I've seen some that produce a very attractive cut, quite smooth and even. School I used to work in had a Ford flail mower about 8' wide that they used to mow the lawns and it looked great. I've got an old 1960's vintage Brady crop-chopper flail mower that will eat about anything, but does NOT leave a manicured surface. Great for chewing up cornstalks and small trees, however.

Safer.... yeah, probably. Biggest danger on the flail mower seems to be running it with the front too high, and the counter-rotating flails sending things toward the operator. I don't think they'll throw rocks, etc. as badly as a bush hog. Neighbor had a bushhog mower that threw a softball-sized rock through the wall of his house! Put a dent in the kitchen range, missing his wife by only a few feet!
