Whats the difference between the various rotary cutter brands. I currently have a Howse rotary cutter but it is getting quite banged up and dusn't cut well any more. There are many brands and many prices - some much more than others - can anyone tell me their experiences?

I'm using an old (I have no idea as to how old) FMC "Sidewinder" 6' mower that I drag behind a '45 JD "A" (no 3 pt. on the tractor) and, it has proven to be darn near indestructible. More times than not, it will nearly stall the tractor in heavy grass/brush, but so far, absolutely nothing has broken on the mower.
Hope you have good luck with whatever you decide to get!

There is a difference in rotary cutters. I like the Woods brand because they have lasted well for me. If i was buying new i'd buy a Woods medium duty Brush Bull. CJ

Funny I am going to pick up a mower this afternoon. It is the Servis-Rhino CY60. It has a molded 3/16 steel deck with reinforcing on top, not underneath where the grass slings. It is their top of the line and has a (get this) 120 hp gearbox (on a 5'mower). The brochure says "cutting utility rights-of-ways, groves and orchards, mowing roadsides, municipal and industrial sites".

A retired guy is selling it as he bought this place and thought he would use it but doesn't. We haggled to $650 on a barely used mower that had to list over $2k new.

I have (have had) Brush Hog, Mohawk, Deere Gyromire, One I can't remember and King Kutter. The King Kutter is inexpensive but I can't keep it together. Almost every time I mow something bends or breaks. This last time, the bolt fell out that sets the height for the rear wheel.

The Rhino looks real strudy. We'll see.

Just do yourself this favor: Get a gearbox larger than the hp of the tractor you plan to use. You won't regret it especially if you buy the larger machine that has multiple boxes that are matched in height and gear ratio.

I have experience with Woods, Rhino, Bush Hog, Sidewinder, and Deere. At least the first 3 make 2-3 different grades. The mid grade is worth the extra. Been thrilled with every Bush Hog, from 8' to 20'. The Sidewinder is near indestructable. Deere and Woods were ok for clean pastures and good resale but wouldn't take the punsihment I gave it. The Rhino was a POS but I heard that the older models were pretty good.

Schulte makes a very heavy duty one but 6ft is the smallest unit they make. They are made in Canada.
