14-T knotter problem

When my 14-T baler is running the cam on clutch gear hits on the dog roller and will sometimes release the dog letting the knotter shaft turn enough to let the needles come up and release the plunger stop which shears the pin and stops the baler. The knotter shaft will drift back instead of staying in what I call the home position which lets the dog roller come in contact with the cam. The bushing in the clutch gear seems worn but what keeps the knotter shaft in the correct place? The newer knotters have a disk brake which mine does not. Any suggestions????? ?Thanks!

Fudd, Dosen't the 14T have a flat bar attached to the needle yoke that just slides through a clamp ass'y on the side of the bale case? It has been a long time since I have been around a 14T. Some of the N-H's had the bar type brake. If it has this type brake, just tighten the clamp to hold the knotter in the "home" position.

Our 1961 vintage 14T had a curved brake on the needle yoke to prevent needle drift. There were two adjustments, one on the outside and one on the inside to preload the friction pads. You need to tighten both sets of springs to get friction. Low pto rpm leads to sluggish tying and failure to latch in home. Count your plunger strokes and check your operators manual if you lack an engine tach.

I try to run it at 60-65 strokes a minute or one a second. I think I have the needle brake set to where the book says. Thanks for the comments , guys!!

Are you talking about the needle brake? I tried to tighten that but no luck. What I finially did was bring home a clutch return spring from a Ford F-750 and spring load the arm that runs the needles so it always goes to the home position and the spring holds it there. Just finished balng 265 bales and it never missed a one. The windrows were so big I had to go in low gear and they filled the pickup most ot the time. The old thing worked great. Thanks for the reply!
