for the newly restored '51 MH field mower. I could make one myself if my lathe was long enough. I understand it needs to be 37" long, 1" diameter at the small end and 1-3/8" at the large end. Anyone have a great idea where to hunt one up?

Thank guys!
This mower hasn't been on the tractor in my memory (45 years). Dad grew up on a farm, but like some after the war, found diesel mechanics more interesting that butchering chickens. I have washed a few udders for my uncle however. I'm keeping the Pony running for Dad now that he's gone, and wanted to put some of the implements right before they faded away too much. The handle idea is the one I'll go with.

We always called that a finger board.

A stick, rod, or board at the end of a sickle mower the pushes the cut hay back into the swath. That keeps it from falling into the uncut hay and clogging on the next pass.

Windboard. Ok. Never saw a 'stick'', but a metal or wooden plate with a metal rod or 2 on it....

Thanks.

Pony, if you are using a sickle bar mower, you got something to do with livestock, and that means yer gonna have busted pitchfork around. Whack that sucker off square on the little end and on a pretty severe angle on the other end. There's your grass stick. Or see your FRIENDLY name brand dealer and FORK over some cash . Good Luck! Try a dowell rod, or spade handle, if not real picky go get a branch off of a tree about the size you want. Lots of them made with a hedge stick last a long time won,t rot or rust. Have used rebar.

I always found an old shovel handle worked well.

Closet pole is 1-3/8" diameter, and douglas fir if I remember correctly, probably have to sand the taper since it's pretty tough and stringy.

We made our replacements out of 5/16" steel rod. Then we could bend them to best handle whatever height of material we were cutting.

Don't get too fancy unless this is a parade mower.
