I RECENTLY ACQUIRED A 9N FROM MY FATHER/IN/LAW. HE HAD IT FOR ABOUT 35 YEARS. IT SEEMS TO BE IN VERY GOOD CONDITION. HE USED IT FOR SOME PLOWING YEARS AGO BUT MORE RECENTLY IT HAS JUST BEEN SNOW REMOVAL AND THE OCCASIONAL STUMP OR BUSH PULLING. HE NEVER HAD THE NEED FOR THE PTO SHAFT OUTPUT. I WANT TO USE THE 9N FOR BUSH/WEED CONTROL. WITH THE LIMITED HP,I AM CONSIDERING A 4FT UNIT. BUT CONSIDERING THE HIGHER TIP SPEEDS ON A 5FT UNIT, IT MAY BE THE BETTER CHOICE. THE 9N IS EQUIPPED WITH THE DEARBORN/HI-LIFT SO A MOWER WOULD BE REASONABLY BALANCED. I DON'T HAVE A "LIVE PTO",SO I WILL BE USING A "ORC". I HAVE SOME CONCERN ABOUT CLUTCH WEAR ON STARTING THE LARGER, 5FT UNIT. I HAVE NO NEED TO CHOP UP TREES, THE OVERGROWTH IS ABOUT THE DIAMETER OF MY FINGERS ( ALTHOUGH I HAVE VERY LARGE HANDS! ). MY RESEARCH ON USED MOWERS IN THIS AREA HAS TURNED UP MOSTLY JUNK, RUSTED/WORN OUT UNITS. SINCE I FEEL I DONT NEED A HEAVY DUTY UNIT SO I AM CONSIDERING A MOWER SOLD BY CENTRAL TRACTOR, WHICH SEEMS TO BE QUITE REASONABLY PRICED, AND THEY ARE PRESENTLY "ON SALE". I DON'T HAVE THE FEEL FOR THE REAL WORLD HP DEMANDS OF THESE MOWERS AND THE WEAR AND TEAR ON THE TRACTOR. ANY SUGGESTIONS, CRITICISM OR ANY OTHER LEVEL OF INSIGHT FROM THOSE WITH MORE EXPERIENCE IN THIS AREA WOULD BE APPRECIATED. THANKS, PAT BLY

I would think a 5 foot would be about right for it. The over-running clutch is a real good idea, and should handle your tractor hp well.

May I suggest in the future you use lowercase typing. Upper case is harder to read, some people consider it rude. Most of us don't, but prefer lowercase. Welcome to computing. :)

Check the Ford N Board. There's a fairly informative thread about your question on page 1 if you hurry. Look for "Hog'n n Bog'n" and read the responses. Good Luck.

I tried a 6 foot Iowa DOT surplus brush hog on an 8N once. I had no troubles starting but it was too much to lift well. I'm sure the CT mower is a lot lighter. Starts will be easier on the tractor clutch if you do them with the throttle closed and the mower on territory already mowed, then open the throttle. The ORC clutch probably rated at 35 or 65 HP isn't going to be overworked by the 20 hp of the 9N.
