A guy has this mower for sale. It is a Ford 5' flail mower. It has a model #that starts out 22 and then it is mangled up some. It has 3 sets of 9 flails. Anybody got any info on this mower? Flails are all there, rusty looking, tho. Gear box is intact and belt looks worn but still serviceable. Is it worth the 300 bucks he wants or should I offer less? A lot less? Would it do as good a job as a finish mower? Like a Woods RM59?

I have the 6 foot version of the same mower, 22-124, otherwise known as a model 907 Flail mower. It's been a good mower. When I ordered the manual for it from CNH, they didn't recognize the 22-124 number, and after some digging and talking to several people got it cross-referenced to a model 907. I think that the 5 foot model was 22-123, and the 7 foot model was 22-125.

Forgot to mention, I payed $250 for it. Before I bought it, I had the dealer hook it up to a tractor and spin it up to PTO speed. Otherwise you can end up with one where the blade carrier is bent, which vibrates horribly (I bought a Mott at an auction that had this problem - luckily I only lost $100 on it - too expensive to fix).

Mike,
I have the same mower 7 foot wide. I paid $500 for it off ebay. Very little rust, stored inside, and a set of one year old blades. Had two little stress cracks I welded up. Cuts like a champ. I have only mowed twice with it. Both times taking down grass in the 18-24" range, so I really cant say if it is as good as a mowing deck. In about two weeks I will have enough grass to finish mow. From the prices I have been watching $300 sounds ok.

How are the flails attached? If each row is held on by a common rod instead of individually attached, have him pay you to take it away. The old Fords were made that way and people cussed them when they had to replace flails.

The John Deere combines straw shredder flails are set up the same way and nobody cusses them.
