Hi All,

All eight of these lock ears on all four spool bolts have been torched off on this 30-year old disc that I bought.

The gangs all spin and feel just like a new disc. I'm thinkin' that all the bearings have been replaced somewhere along the line.

'Spose? Why else would someone take a torch to the lock ears?

Allan

I redid a 10' disc and bought the HD bearings and things from ASC.

Bearings: Their p/n 17888 have a square body and zerk ($12.95) 8 ea. Wanted the zerk so I could insure they were greased. (Pfft on "sealed " bearings in this hazardous environment.)
1 1/8 axle x 49.5" p/n 11619 ($14.49) 2 ea.

The locking plate and collar in your pic:

Collar p/n 11632 collar ($6.99)
Locking plate (the tab welded to the collar) p/n 11631 $1.69

22" discs, raised notched, 7 gauge (really thick) $10.32 bought 10 of these.

So, for about $250 I have a new tandem disc that I use as a plow also (with about 600 # on top).

Don't know why the guy welded the plates on. I like them loose as you have to run the new parts a little to get them to settle in then tighten some more. Then you can weld if you have to.

Looks to me like it just broke off, not torched? Shoup handles a lot of disk parts...

Allan, I have been working on an old IH 500 tandem disk. This disk is an early 70s model. IH still carries parts for them. OBTW... bearings for this ol darlin are $73 each through IH. They can't be gotten from other bearing supply outlets. BCA isn't making any more, unless they are going to make them on an as needed basis for IH. I did find 3 bearings In L.A. (old stock) That is in all of the USA. IH has 50 of them in Dallas ,TX. At the parts terminal.
Before you start breaking down the gangs , go to IH and get an expanded view of the gang assembly. A 500 has a different set up with the spools and bearing and a sleeve that the bearing goes on. That sleeve is about $100 bill. We cut on one not knowing what is was. This 500 disk was my first Rodeo on an IH disk. The center shaft just hold the whole thing together. Your disk is very simular to this one Im working on. Just didn't want to hear that a suprise jumped up and got you. Drop me an email and we can visit, If you want! Hope this helps.
Later,
John A.

Howdy! Just climbed out of the combine. Came home for nurishment. I have an old John Deere disc setting in my "for sale" lot that has the lock-ears gone too. I "removed" them. I was trying to tighten the gang bolts. When I started bending the lock-ears back, they ALL broke off. Guess they were bent one time too many. A good many disc's that I run through my sales lot have them missing. Some people just don't like using all the parts....John

My neighbor has three IH discs. All of which I have repaired at some time.I do not know what series # or if they happen to be 500's.The bearings on these machines are encased in two cheek plates which are about 3/32"thick X 4.5 inches square w/outside corners rounded.Just inside each radiused corner there is a 1/2 inch bolt hole.To use these bearings properly you must install a sleeve.Dont know if this is the same setup, but I purchase these remount bearings for around $22.00 and sleeves are $3.00-4.00 .They are almost certainly mfg. in China. If this sounds like what you mentioned in your post, maybe I can be of some help.
