Alfalfa/Timothy Hay

This spring, I would like to plant about 2 or 3 acres of Alflafa/Timothy hay. Right now, the field is in wiregrass and weeds.

I plan to moldboard and disc it in mid-fall, and then in mid-spring, come along and disc it again, and then plant alfalfa @ 15 pds to the acre and then timothy @ 10 pds to the acre with a Brillion grass seeder. Are these good seeding rates, or should they be more or less for a mixed hay? I would like a thick stand.

Problem-The field I plan to put in hay is surrounded by more wiregrass and weeds. How do I keep weeds from spreading into the hayfield? Is there a herbicide I can use that won't kill the alfalfa and timothy?

Do a soil test to make sure your fertility and ph is where it needs to be. If you're in the part of the country where lime is needed, be sure to get it on in time for it to do its work before you put that expensive seed in the ground. The amount of timothy you're using sounds kind of high to me. Thumbs up on using the Brillion seeder. They're the best. Jim.

Seeding rates sound ok to me, I like 20# of alfalfa in the late spring with 8 # timothy drilled notil into it in the fall (just really have a hard time getting timothy here in the spring). Seems to me that if I plant them together and it gets dry the deeper rooted alfalfa sucks too much water from the shallow rooted timothy. As far as the wiregrass and weeds, why only 3 acres, fix it all and wont have to worry. I've had a real encroachment problem from adjacent areas, especially summer annuals.

Mr. Rogers,

If it were I, I'd only throw 1 lb of grass, but that is entirely up to you.

Don't worry about that adjacent field. Your stand of hay plus all the cutting you are going to be doing will take care of anything along those lines of worry.

Allan
