I'm baling coarse phalaris. Bale length on the RH side is often longer than LH with some banana bales. Not covered in the manual. Anyone help?

I had the same problem with my S69 NH. I adjusted the feeder forks and it solved the problem.

A 66 doesn't have feeder forks - it uses an auger and a wadboard. The only way I can think of that could cause banana bales would be if the tension on one side is different than the other. It is also possible that the hay dog on one side is gone, so that the bale pushes back too much and keeps the twine slack.

Besides any mechanical problems, windrow shape and baling position are both extremely important.

The windrow should be symmetrical and I like it to just fit between the tractor front tires with the top just touching the undercarriage (80 hp JD 4020.....bout 4"wide by 15" high sides even with each other).

Approach the windrow at a reduced throttle centered on the row. As soon as the bale catches, go to full PTO rpm and go to one side of the row as far as you can and still pick up all your row. Stay there for a minute and quickly go to the other side for a minute. Just try to keep track of where you were and when so that you load even amounts. The center will fill it"self.

Problem you mentioned:

Staying centered on the row which will not fill the edges (bannana)

Windrow uneven (light on one side) or you do zig zag, but don"t keep track of where you were and load more hay on one side as compared to the other.

I do mine manually. If you have electronic sensors it shouldn"t be a problem.

Mark

The Super 66 is a 48 year old New Holland square baler. No electronics, and one does not straddle the windrow (quite). :)

Keep forgetting to get these glasses updated. Darn.

Alan, I've run 66's and 69's. It seems to be all about bale tension with these units. A little twist one way or the other on the bale tensioner seems to make a big difference. This season (after only 8 years of goofing around) I spent a lot of time checking bale tension and makeing small adjustments as I first started baling. Differences from 1st to 2nd cutting required some frigging with the tension too. Good luck! Jared

Thanks to the guys who helped me last year.
I tried playing with tension, zig zagging the row but still produced banana bales.
Then I set the wad board to push around 2 inches further in than NH Specs and produced perfect bales!

Hand run to make sure no fouling before you try it though!

My Super 69 was doing the same thing. Found there were 4 bearings on the plunger that were shot, allowing it to cock sideways a bit on each stroke. Not fun or cheap to replace, but it cured tyhe problem.

I had to look that one up! :)

Seemed to be 2 things associated with phalaris - reed canarygrass. The other site mentioned cultivating for something to smoke or snort....

That was interesting.

How are the teeth on the raker bar that feeds the bale chamber. While I am not familiar with the crop you are baling I have ran into problems with banana bales caused by uneven feeding. When dad would bale rank sweet clover he would crowd the windrow to the far side of the feeder pickup to get a more even feed into the bale chamber.
JMHO for what it's worth.
