Combine as Thresher

Anybody know if you can use a combine as a thresher? I know I read about it someplace. Why? Well, between my job and the weather, it's a sure bet I can bind my oats at some point. Finding somebody with a thresher then becomes the problem. Threshers in this area start at a grand and go up. I can get an Allis All Crop for 150.00
We're only talking 6-7 acres of oats. The sticking point seems to be the binder twine. A thresher is set upto cut the bundle. A combine just has to plug on a bundle if given the chance.
No, I don't want to windrow and then use a pickup attachment on the combine, unless you know where I can get one cheap!

Thanks guys- I'm in northern NY, basicly Canada, and there are very few pickup heads for any combines around here. The AllCrop is local and cheap and seemed like a good way to go. I know they work great. I have neighbors with threshers, but I hate to bother them. You can see my position. Thanks again.

Here is Southern MN Owattonna self-propelled swathers go for $100 with a Wisconsin engine - working. Pull type small swathers go for less, the very few I see left.

Anyhow, remove the reel, and you will have to cut the twine & feed the oats in loose I would imagine. The shock would 'shock' your combine if tossed in whole. A sickle section bolted on a broken fork handle works well to cut the twine. Feed in loose with a fork, & be careful you don't topple in after. You will need to figure out a way to get the straw & chaff away from out back - a blower from an old corn sheller would maybe work, fork it away by hand, whatever.

Around here the swather & pickup would be the simplest way to go, but I understand ecconomics might be different for you.
