I recently purchased a 300 gal fuel barrel on a stand that i plan for storing diesel. However the tank has not had fuel in it for some time and i cannot tell what fuel it previousley stored. The inside of the tank seems clean, and I plan on painting the exterior and installing a new filter. What other steps should i take in turning this into a diesel fuel barrel?

I did as you on a real old tank and just got a couple of extra filter cartridges. By the time I had emptied the first tank, I needed no more filters. I got the water absorbing type.

Now. You have to have this tank vented (to work and for safety) which means that your hydrocarbons will evaporate in the hot sun and you will loose precious fuel.

So I would recommend a cover to keep the sun off and if you can't do that at least paint it white, not silver (aluminum).

For any non believers of the paint, stand next to the side of a white house with the afternoon sun shining on it and then next to a tin barn under the same circumstances and ask yourself what is or is not hitting you in the face. Then put your had on each surface. You'll convince yourself immediately as to what type paint you want on your fuel container.

AGfarmallman, I had the same dilema as you and I found a nice 100 gallon tank as well. It suits my consumption and guarentees I always have fresh fuel that is in season. I parked my 200 gallon tank because I never got it all used up before winter and before the blends changed. I pulled the drain plug on the bottom and flushed it out with a gallon or so of diesel fuel, taped the threads on the plug and reinstalled it. The pump pick up is designed so that it does not touch the bottom of the tank but remains about an inch and a half off the bottom, this prevents sediment from being pumped out. Most of my fuel is used for haying, drawing manure and blowing snow so season to season and the right blend is a concern. I painted the tank with TREMCLAD silver but the fuel identification stickers won't stick to it, so I may use recreational white, looks good on tanks...my two cents...Mike in Exeter Ontario

My thoughts are you let oil company store fuel. Here is Mass, with the change of seasons, our blends change. I have three deisel tractors but I get a 55 gallon drum and go get the off road fuel myself. That way, I use it all, condensation is not a issue and my fuel does not hang around and never get used up. I also get the season blend becuse I go through the 55 gallon quick.

I wish I could by on a 55 gal drum at a time. One tractor takes 140 for a fill, another takes 80 and the combine takes another 80+.

Even with the 300 gallon, I'd have bulk delivered on a daily basis. Sometimes I wish I had more than the 1000 sitting on the yard.

You may want to consider putting some fuel in it. An empty tsnk is of little value except to show the neighbors that you have a tank.

If it's really clean on the inside it probably stored diesel oil. If you can turn it so the filler neck is pointing downward and you tap on it without getting any crud, you're probably good to go. Your filter should take care of anything else.
Check the joint where the hose comes out and disassemble and reseal with a good fuel resistant sealer or Teflon pipe tape. You don't want that joint leaking after you have 300 gallons of fuel in it. You might consider filling it part way up to make sure that you don't have any pinholes near the bottom. That's all I can think of for now.

Hi , You might also consider flushing it with a little diesel or kerosene while you are resealing the outlet . ...Randy
