My bale chamber knives need sharpening. They have been shimmed about 200 thousands. New knives from NH are $90. Can I keep sharpening and shimming? What is the best way to sharpen bale chamber knives? Thanks

Yes, you can keep sharpening and shimming. CAUTION: I cannot stress enough the importance of making sure the plunger is pushed sideways all the way towards the pickup when you shim the knives up close. I have witnessed far too many plunger knives snapped in half by people shimming the knives close and forgetting to make sure the plunger was all the way over towards the pickup. HINT: At the very bottom of both knives, grind a short bevel or taper to ensure the knives can pass each other without the points of the knives "hooking" each other. This way if you make a mistake in your shimming process, you have a much better chance of getting the knives past each other without them catching. Steve

Well I use my 4" angle grinder with a 80 sanding pad. The kind with the rubber back and you just use the paper back discs etc. Anyway I always touch up the plunger knive on the plunger when I take it out. The stationary knive I pull off and clamp in the vise. Again I take the angle grinder and make it razor sharp. A plain old "grinding" disc doesn't work as well or a bench grinder etc. With the 80-100 grit sanding disc you get a nice even proffesional looking job. Check your bearings & plunger side rail when the plunger is out.

Stick it in and set the knive clearance to .010" to .030". After I set mine I lay a piece of card board up against the stationary knive and turn the baler over by hand. The plunger will cut the card board like a scissors cutting paper. If it bends and jams it between the 2 knives there're set too far apart.

Sure it will work with a wider gab between the knives to a point but it works harder and the bales will not look as pretty.

I used to sharpen knives on IH balers and also NH. I take them out and take to grinder wheel if you have one big enough, otherwise clamp in vise and use hand grinder. Try to keep shims in place or get back in the same place as they were. Sharpening shouldn't change the adjustment there but after you put them back in run through plunger adjustments and check that they don't come together. Try to put on same angle as before and I wouldn't up on a razor edge, it will roll soon.
