tandem disc inquiry

I recently bought a JD model RWA 10 ft tandem disc. I noted the front blades are 16 inches in diameter and the rears are 17 inches. I can't see any reason for that. The parts catalog only lists either 16, 18 or 20 inch blades available.
Any ideas as to why the different blades?

My experience is same as the others, front will always wear faster than rear. Surely you didn't think they would be same size as new.

Hi Hugh,

Funny you said that. I had a tandem with 16's on the front and near 18's on the rear.

Wanted to use it for a plow and plow deep so I upped the front dia from what appeared to have been the original 18" to 20" scalloped.

When I got to the freight dock to pick up my new discs from ASC I couldn't believe my eyes. They had shipped me 22" instead..... .and charged accordingly.

Rather than go thru the trouble or redoing everything to get the dia I wanted, I decided to use them anyway.

Plow great, but they are so big, I can hardly get to the field without them dragging the road. Ha.

Trying to weight the rear to raise them up is futile as you know as well as I, when you tail load a trailer it jackknifes.

Best,

Mark

They wear. And on mine the front wears a little faster than the back.

How much are they worn? Probably started out as 18s.....could've been 20s.... all the way around. Front wears quicker; not unheard of to swap the front and rear in order to get another year or two out of set of blades.
