Troy, Just make sure you think this through before you invest a lot of money. I have a 14-T that I bought for $200.00 that had been sitting. I invested another $500 or so in parts and labor to rebuild the knotters. Since that time it has been a pretty reliable baler, although it still misses a knot now and then in heavy hay. My point is that I bale 10 acres, twice a year. A 40 acre hay field is a lot of baling for a baler that old. In my part of the country I've seen some prettyt good looking balers newer and probably more reliable than the 14T sell for anywhere from $500 to $2000. If you are serious about it, I echo what everyone else has said. Try very hard to find a parts baler you can have sitting in the woods. Do you have any idea of the baler was working when it was parked? If so you might be able to get ir going pretty easily, but I'm willing to bet it was parked because it wasn't working. I remember my first crop before I had the money to fix mine. One knotter wouldn't work so I hand tied about 150 bales as they came out of the baler. Not fun or practical. Good luck!!

it was parked cause a new round bailer was purchased and with no place for the 14T to be inside it went behind the barn

Troy, It sounds like you might be in good shape then. Unlike some other people on this page I think the John Deere Balers are excellent balers. Assuming you already have a book, the one adjustment that I've found to be key is the needle adjustment. In short make sure the needles come as close as possible to the twine disks without actually hitting them. I'll give you some idea of my experience. I hay a ten acre field. Frist cutting was 1200 bales the baler missed knots on about 15 to 20 bales. 2nd cutting I got 450 bales and missed only 3 or 4. My only concern for you and the age of the baler is the amount of hay you're talking about (40 acres) but if the baler was working when it was parked, you could have really good luck with it. Larry

Troy: Go to the boneyard at your JD dealer and see if they have anything. We needed a slip clutch for ours and we had one made. Cost 290 bucks. We then found that our dealer could have had a new one there the next day for 140. If you're really stuck post a note here and I could crank up a photocopy of our manual and I could send it by mail. Would take a couple of weeks though. Tom. Post notes here.

Troy, You would be surprised at how many parts a John Deere dealer will be able to obtain for that old baler. I've helped a few friends overhaul some 14-T's and didn't have many problems with parts. Also look for 14-T's being parted out. Should you need part numbers I also have the parts book and operators manual for the 14-T. The operators manual is helpful when it comes to timing the baler. A helpful hint- when you think your ready to give that baler a try, run it through a few cycles by hand to make sure everything is few and not hitting. Also make sure the plunger safety stop works in the bale chamber. The needles can get wiped out in an instant as I learned the hard way one day. Good luck.
