Hi Guys,

Went and bought an old John Deere grain drill yesterday. It looks almost identical to this one except that it has a dual trip lift and the grass seeder is on the front instead of the rear.

I know I can unpin the press wheels and throw 'em in the pickup to transport the 25 miles.

Kinda wonderin' if I have to remove some drive chains and if I'll be okay on those old wheel bearings towing slow behind the pickup.

Lots of press drills like that in wheat country. Just make sure when the cylinder lift arm is pinned in transport that the gear teeth aren't going to hit and jump in gear if the carrier is worn some. If a shaft is locked up it will break gears and twist something. Its not that bad to take the covers and chains off. The press springs adjust too and you can loosen the tension and take the cotter on top out and lift them more for transport. Then you don't have to worry when going off the road some about disk hitting. Those are good ole drills ;) and the right color. lol.

a while back i got one like that except it had the galvanized box. i only had to tow it home 2 miles. but the wheels were a little crooked for sitting for many years. and the dumb thing would weave back and forth. 5 mph was bout as fast as i could go. i ended up never using it. it still sitting under the lean-to.

Hi Dug,

My neighbor used to have one of those old galvanized 10 footers and it was really the "community drill". Everyone around was always borrowing the darned thing.

That old drill must have planted a million acres and was still goin' strong the last I knew.

They are just a tough ol' bird, that's fer sure. :>)

I'd grease her up good and check the wheel bearings. Should be good to go up to 25 mph.

When did you take that picture? Recently? So you had more white stuff since you showed us that picture of the field of cheet?

i'd just pull it home as is. (if anything just make sure their tight first) just think how many miles you put on going back and forth in the field. 25 miles home slow isn't gonna hurt anything, then you can inspect and replace in the comfort of your own shop.

Brother bought one similar 6-7 years ago (since sold it) at a sale and towed it about 20 miles @ 30 MPH. no ill effects.
