Hi Guys,

Talked to the fellow who has the 12' 495 haybine for sale. Says it is ready to go; just needs greasing and a quick look-over.

He is asking $800 for it if I promise to take a second tired machine for parts; he wants 'em out of his yard.

The closest I can come to this deal is a tired old hydroswing 114 for upwards of $3K.

Should I gamble on the old 495? People seem to think that they are a pretty good swather.

(these pictures aren't the actual machine, just representative shots)

Allan, If you get the sickle bar moco, read the posts else where about using small bolts to fasten knife sections on. They are the best thing since sliced bread. I'm sure the owner has extra blades, don't forget them. Have fun.

Yes,

I've been reading about those. Sound like the best thing since sliced bread.

The owner says he'll throw in a new sickle also. He's really wanting this thing outta his yard! :>)

Thanks,

Allan

Price sounds OK. I've been using my retired neigbor's 495 for a few years - he doesn't want to sell it - "Might need it some day"! The wobble box can be major $ to fix but if you get a manual and go thru it, it will likely knock down a lot of hay still. Make sure you know where all the grease fittings are - some are well hidden. good advice, I bought a 467 7 foot off a guy this morning who is now using a 495, Say's his roids can't take the seat time of a smaller haybine anymore :) He showed me 29 grease points and said the bolted on blades are the cat's a** rather than the rivited ones. Makes good sense.

Thanks Rob,

How do you fold that thing up? Do you take the right rear side wheel assembly and physically bring it around to the folded hitch side?

I gotta tow this thing about 13 miles cross country; hopin' to use the pickup truck to drag it and just ain't got this one figured out yet. :>(

In a word, yup! The machine is very heavy and there's a lot on downforce on the drawpole in the field position. I've always moved it in semi-transport (Neighbor's 4 miles away by road) which is moving the drawpole to the extreme left hand position without moving the wheel positions. It's narrow enough then to get down a rural/country road. There should be a jack attached to the frame for re-locating the one wheel and turning the other 90 degrees if need be. HTH.

Allan, I don't know a dang thing about haybines. But, any time you can get a machine for 800 that will do the job, in steed of spending big money, you stand a chance of showing a profit. The question is "will it do the job?". Sure its nice to drive around in new, shiney equipment and show off to the neibours, but that don't feed the banker.

Morning Kenny,

You must have read my book. I am not interested in any way of impressing the neighbors and I think that these new machinery prices are totally out of hand.

If an old machine will do the same darned job with only a little fixin', I cannot see spending that kind of money on a shiney new machine.

Thanks for the note,

Allan

It sounds like a deal to me. Especially with the parts machine. Are the rollers good, etc. Unless you can see an issue and you can hook it up and run it for a few minutes I would jump on it myself

Sounds like a deal. If the cash flow is tight and you are not trying to handle hundreds of acres it should do just fine.

John

I have a 114 on the lot it was just a new 16ft trade in one owner, also have a 8312 discmowco good unit but allnew cutter bar last season. The units your are looking at i had tried some and the only drawback was itf it is little it seems to ball up on the sides where its tyring to pullinto the narrower rols than cut. Has to be drie conditions to cut. that was just my experience. I run a 1460 JD discbine currently, you just go no matter what the conditions are $6000.00 on it.

First the fact that you know the owner makes a lot of points, Second, does the rest of his machinery and buildings look like he takes care of his equipment? Did he run it himself, or did he let the hired help tear it up? Check with New Holland and see if parts are still available, as what was broke on the running machine and taken off the second parts machine, are the high wear items. Better to find a good usable machine that is being sold for legitimate reasons, than to buy something from a dealer with no history, or to look all over hell and gone, to find out that the first machine you looked at was the best of the bunch, not to mention the time and gad involved. As you have said, a lot of farmer owned equipment still has a lot of useful life left in it, but is just too small for real farming. I believe you said that the owner is cutting back on his hay ground, if so, he would be using it still. $800 is a whole lot easier to write off as a bad experience than several thousand should worst come to worst.

Thanks Guy,

This fellow parked this swather a few years ago when he changed over to the self propelled units.

It has been setting for quite awhile and was only used lately for tidying up along the roads and around his yard.

I looked it over pretty good and all I can see wrong with it is that it has a 4" "ding" in the dump chute from him backing into something somewhere along the line and it will not have any real effect on its operation.

I've known this ol' boy for a long, long time and he is as honest as they come. He assures me that she is ready to cut hay.

Thanks again,

Allan

If you've known the guy a long time and know him to be honest, that alone makes it a deal in my book. I'm sure he could show you how to fold it up for transport, too.

For $800, maybe I'll drive out to NE and get it. But I'd have no way of loading the parts machine, too. I'll leave that one to you!

Yes Sir,

That's gonna be a bit of a problem 'cause the dolly wheel on the old parts machine is missing. :>(
