I recently acquired a howse cutter and have had trouble ever since, Though the trouble seems to be with the prevous owners rather than the equipment itself. But I would like to here from anyone who has a howse cutter before I invest more money in this project. The customer service people at howse have been nice.

Here's how they make em so cheap.
1.Start with a Chinese gearbox. Other mfg. use these but first remove the Chinese bearings and replace with better quality. Sorry, we don't have the time to replace those sorry bearings.
2.Getcha some cheap rerolled steel. You know, old railroad rails, melted down cars, hell we ain't picky!
3.Use lard, uh grease sparingly. Gotta sell lots of replacement parts. Since we sell them cutters so cheap we gotta make it up some where.
4.Use cheap labor. We've got some prison boys down here on work release, we just put em out under a shade tree with a little lincoln arc welder and they do the rest.

I bought a 5' Howse about a year ago. Before I did I went to all the tractor boards and asked the same question. Got a couple of negatives from people who never owned one but the owners who responded were positive. I use mine to keep a meadow open at my place in the Ozarks. Lots of rocks, some small brush. No problems yet. One of reasons I bought the Howse was weight. I knew the deck was a lighter guage but my tractor is a compact and service duty cutters were to heavy. Spurlock's Equipment (870-932-7262)outside Jonesboro, AR sells a lot of Howes cutters and they stock repair parts. In some cases you can get parts at a discount from a dealer. Manufactures usually sell a list.

I'll tell you about mine. I bought mine new. They aint worth a hoot. Them service people should be nice the parts are high and you'll need alot of them.
The decks are built too light out of cheap steel, and the gear boxes don't hold up worth a flip.
I soon learned not to use mine except to keep the light stuff cut around the barns and along fences.
If you use it real lightly you might be ok.

i agree 100% with you, burrhead. i bought a NEW 5' howse cutter and the gearbox bolts came loose on the first job with it. took some time to readjust and tighten. very poor quality and the deck sheet metal is very thin. got rid of that thing and bought a New BUSH HOG brand. been using it for 5 yrs and not a bit of trouble." The sweetness of cheap prices is forgotton sooner than the bitterness of poor quality"

Yeah I got a JD that I don't know how old it is, but it has never needed anything except a good operator.
