Hello: I have a new holland 479 haybine and was wondering how to set the spring preload properly, right now they are set up so that if I lift it up it settles lightly back down evenly on both sides. Is this set up right. Thanks Wayne

Tighten the springs until the header doesn't return quickly enough to suit you, or the uphill end floats up on a sidehill. Then let off until it follows the ground properly. This method will account for YOUR field, machine, and operating conditions. New Holland Haybines' header spec's are closer to 50lbs; Discbines closer to 100lbs. Other brands may vary.

Wayne: The springs should be set tight enough so when platform is down, grabing cross bar in front of reel should be about 100 lb. lift, to raise the platform.

Wayne, it depends on how musculiar you are. I think it supposed to be 70-75 lbs of lift. Any less it may bounce and not settle back quick enough, but its easy to see your close. Good luck...
