NH 849 Noise Repair?

Mornin' Guys,

Got one for ya and wanna see what you fellas think.

On this old NH 849 baler that I bought, the old gal is just in pretty darned good shape and bales hay like a monster 'except' it has quite a bit of chain noise coming from where the round machine bolt heads on the big chain cross bars make contact with those two big rubber rollers.

Over the years and with normal wear, the action of those bolt heads have worn the rubber material away from the drums on both sides and have left a "track" on each side of the drums, so that the bolt heads now ride down on the rollers' metal core.

This, in turn, sets up a "clickity, clackity" noise every time a chain bar comes around the drum.

Naturally, I don't want to buy those two big rubber rollers and was wondering if there was some kind of a "spray on" rubber coating that I could "fill" those tracks back in with? Kind of a 'spray on rubber' material?

I know, it sounds crazy, but I'm old, plus I'm kinda picky and can remember the balers sure didn't make that noise when they were new.

The prior owner has already made all the expensive repairs of replacing the chain, the bars and the bolts and if I could just shut that chain noise up, the baler would really be a sweet old unit.

Thanks,

Allan

I'd go to www.farmshow.com and look through some of the advertised products or do a search for roller repair. I'm pretty sure I saw something in there that souonds like what you're looking for. An epoxy or rubber compound of some sort.

Alan, a few years ago I was running an 851 baler and the same pieces wore out. I found a beet harvester with identical rubber rollers. I would check some of the local machinery salvage places. I think I gave $5 each about 10 years ago. I can't remember what kind of machine it was. Hope this helps. Ron

Allan, You might try several layers of spray on bed liner, but I doubt if it would last very long. Get this in spray can from auto parts store.

...never seen one before, but can you cut the sidewalls out of an old small tire and run it around the roller and bridge the wear point? Hound

Hi Hound,

I'm thinking 'bout that stuff that the body shops use. That Sticky backed rubber tape stuff.

'Course that would probably only last as long as it took to put it on there. :>(

I know, I'm too derned picky!

...would that stuff last? Never been close to a round baler. Went from small squares right to big squares. Hound

A man standing at a parts counter of a implement dealer, asking for "Spray on Rubber" was very surprised when a very attractive woman standing next to him turned and said, "Hello!" Her face was beaming. He gave her that "who are you look," and he couldn't remember ever having seen her before. Then, noticing his look, she figured she had made a mistake and apologized. "Look," she said, "I'm really sorry but when I first saw you, I thought you were the father of one of my children," and with that, she turned and walked out of the store. The guy was obviously dumbfounded by her remark, and thought to himself, "What the heck is the world coming to? Here is a woman who can't even keep track of who fathered her children!" Then he got a little panicky. "I don't remember her," he thought.....but MAYBE....during one of the wild parties he had been to when he was in college, perhaps he DID, in fact, father her child! He ran from the store and caught her in the parking lot by her truck and asked, "Are you the one I met at that Frat party in college....and then we got really drunk and got carried away on the pool table in front of everyone?" "Good grief! No!" she said with a horrified look on her face. "I was your son's Second Grade teacher!"

Hey that reminds me....
I was in our local computer store talking to the saleswoman when my mobile (cellphone) rang,so making my apologies to her I answered it. A rather panicky woman was on the other end and she greeted me with "Hello Lee? I've s-s-summat to tell yer, I'm p-pregnant!" "Eh who is this please?" I retorted and realising she had dialed the wrong number said "Oh bloody hell!" and hung up. Talk about the 'mother' of all wrong numbers.
Maybe 'Lee' was using spray on rubber too.....

When I was at the local farm show they had a 2 part cold vulcanizing rubber for repairing conveyor rollers.

I'd bet it would work!
